While touring, especially during travel overseas, Mike felt a need to find out more about the songs and songsters he was featuring in live performances. Time spent assembling information from libraries, museums, radio archives, second-hand shops and from personal contacts led to the publication of Mike's service guide to the folk and popular songs of New Zealand, "When the Pakeha Sings of Home", Godwit Press 1992.

Since then he has continued to expand his knowledge of our musical heritage, bringing interesting information and anecdotes into public performances of his ever-expanding homegrown repertoire. Much of this information he is able to bring to life is in his Workshops on New Zealand song.
