In his time in Taranaki, Mike has developed his skills and knowledge of the guitar, not just as a "folk" performer but also in the wide range of rock and pop guitar from classic rock (Eric Clapton, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix etc) to modern bands such as Metallica, Nirvana, the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Guns 'n' Roses, Green Day and My Chemical Romance.

Skills and topics covered in workshops may include:

• Playing with chords: power and barre chords, chord shapes, inversions and progressions.
• Strumming and rhythm techniques: e.g. pick-strum, reggae, blues.
• Fingerpicking.
• Open tunings.
• Slide of bottleneck guitar.
• Also workshops on Performance; being a solo (or group) musician, developing a repertoire and live performance skills, presentation and promotion, recording and royalties.
